The Gomes Package Raiders (top left photo) won a hard fought battle against the Subway Penguins (middle right photo) in the third game of the Fitchburg Street Hockey League beaver division championship series on Wednesday night. The Raiders prevailed 6-0, after winning the first game in the series 5-2, and losing the second game 5-4. Later that night, the Team Sports Red Wings would complete a sweep of the Eastwood Club Thrashers in the penguin division championship series.

After robbery, street hockey deserves support

The community often complains about there not being enough healthy and positive activities for young people in our area as a reason for so many getting into trouble, not exercising enough, etc. The Fitchburg Street Hockey League is one such healthy and positive alternative for Fitchburg citizens.

As a 40-something who kept out of trouble by playing many years in the Fitchburg Street Hockey League as a pre-teen and young man, and now as a coach and sponsor of two Leominster Parochial School Teams in the Leominster Dek Hockey Center, I cannot thank current Fitchburg league president David Cutting and his predecessors enough for keeping the program alive these many decades since I played at the Coolidge Park rinks. Therefore, I was shocked and personally offended to read Karen Mann's article in the recent Fitchburg Pride regarding the break-in at the league's concession stand, stealing food, drinks, candy, cash and children's hockey equipment.

The article asks that anyone with information about the break in to call Fitchburg police, which is every citizens duty. However, in addition we can all do a small part in helping the Fitchburg Street Hockey League to become whole again by donating even a dollar or two to this nonprofit community benefit enterprise.

I found that the Fitchburg Street Hockey League is listed as an authorized charity on the safe and secure NetworkforGood.org donation clearing house website. This nonprofit service will process all checking account, debit and credit card donations, at no cost to the league, and will forward all funds to the Fitchburg Street Hockey League. I ask all of my fellow Fitchburg citizens to join me in going to NetworkforGood.org and to donate whatever they can to support this important community asset.

Food, gear stolen at street hockey HQ

The Fitchburg Street Hockey League took its worst loss of the season two weeks ago when the blockhouse was broken into and burglarized.

According to Police Capt. Philip Kearns, the Fitchburg Police Department received a call on Oct. 15 that items had been stolen from the concession stand and blockhouse, which sits between the two street hockey rinks at Coolidge Park.

Meghan Northway, a coach, league secretary, and member of the Board of Directors, said that all of the food and candy for concessions was taken.

Northway said the loss of concessions is a serious hit to the league, which has two divisions playing in the fall season that will soon end, and had three age groups playing in the spring. She didn't have an estimate on how much revenue the league would lose, but said it will be significant.

"It's very important because all of the proceeds go back to the kids. It goes right back to the league," Northway said. "With that money we're able to run the league. No one down there is paid, it's all volunteers. Any money we make goes back to the community, to the kids."

Kearns estimates the monetary loss to be in the hundreds. Along with the food, hockey equipment, including sticks and a coach's bag, were also taken from the blockhouse.

Northway said it is not uncommon for league officials to leave stuff in the blockhouse.

"It's all locked up," Northway said. "It's our home away from home."

According to Kearns there was forced entry into the building.

Northway said leads are tough to come by, considering how busy the blockhouse is.

"It's so random," she said, "And because of the amount of people we have down there, the police are saying even if they took fingerprints, it would be pointless because of all the volunteers and the coaches who are in there."

Kearns said it happens from time to time, but it is not that common for people to break into the concession stands in Fitchburg.

"The Little League and Street Hockey Association have done what they can to make it burglar proof," said Kearns. "It's unfortunate because all this stuff is for the benefit of kids and youth sports and these people running it are parents."

Police and officials from the street hockey league ask that anyone with information contact the Fitchburg Police Department at (978) 345-9648.
